About the U.S. Citizenship Test (2026 Edition)
The U.S. citizenship test, also known as the naturalization test, is a crucial step in becoming a U.S. citizen. During your naturalization interview, a USCIS officer will ask you up to 20 questions from a list of 128 civics questions. You must answer at least 12 questions correctly (60%) to pass the civics portion of the test. The test is given orally in English, and you must demonstrate your ability to understand and speak basic English.
The civics test covers important topics including American government, history, geography, symbols, and holidays. Questions are organized into three main parts: Principles of American Democracy and System of Government (Questions 1-57), American History including the Colonial Period, 1800s, and Recent History (Questions 58-87), and Integrated Civics covering Geography, Symbols, and Holidays (Questions 88-100). Additional supplementary questions (101-128) cover expanded civics knowledge.
Special Exemptions (65/20 Rule): If you are 65 years or older and have been a permanent resident for at least 20 years, you only need to study 20 designated questions marked with a ★ star. These special questions cover essential American civics that every citizen should know.
